style select: beth harmon

by far the most popular *series* on my blog has been my style select posts and, for me, they’re some of the most fun to write, especially since each one is a little different from the last. today, i want to gush about the looks on netflix’s hit limited series: the queen’s gambit. and, who else would i be talking about, but the main character, beth harmon?

look one

when i was thinking about shows i wanted to write style select’s on, this outfit made the queen’s gambit stand out for me. no other outfit, in my opinion, screams beth harmon like this mod black-and-white dress.

featured in the russian tournament at the end of the show, the dress really encapsulates beth’s journey of maturation through her clothing. i wanted to put it first because there’s no real way i can see myself recreating it, as it’s wholly 60’s. but, i just wanted to gush about the look, nonetheless.

this look is on the other end of the spectrum; it’s probably the easiest to transfer into today’s fashion scene. a pastel lace-trimmed cami and a cable knit cardigan are not hard to find at all.

while this outfit was worn at a low point for beth, i still wanted to include it, because i think it would be really fun to recreate in a new time period.

plus, this look would be super simple to thrift. most goodwill’s have old grandma-esque knit sweaters and little tank tops like beth’s. and, if not thrifting, these pieces are easy to find in any variation at most clothing websites.

i tried to find a sustainable dupe for beth’s tank top, but i really wanted to stay true to the color, as that’s one of the main reasons i love this look. like i mentioned before, though, any thrift store should have a pretty similar tank top if you’re looking for the general look.

before i drown on about tank tops, i thought i’d talk about the urban outfitters top i did chose. again, this color is almost an exact match for beth’s, but it’s a modern twist on the intimate occasion she wore her cami. pairing a structured piece like this corset with a thicker, chunkier piece over top, like reformation’s lemartine cable knit cardigan, is a look that i just love.

look three

in one of my top three favorite scenes of the show, beth is reunited with her childhood friend, jolene. both women have grown and thrived from their joint time at the orphanage. i wanted to include this look because it’s quite easy to recreate (and incorporates a lot of today’s most popular trends).

obviously, they were wearing these looks to play a sport, but the athleisure look in general is all over my feed. whether that be the white headband, tennis skirts, the collared shirt (usually under a sweater), this look is so trendy. though i don’t include it in the redone portion, jolene’s look would be easily recreated with the same polo shirt i listed for beth’s and a pair of navy blue biker shorts (even from the same brand as beth’s skirt)!

look three: redone

i was really proud of this look, because i found mostly sustainable alternatives. the polo shirt above is from reformation (and is surprisingly cheap for the brand). if it’s sold out, a lot of different clothing brands will probably have this basic (and it will definitely be on the racks of your local thrift store). i have something similar in my closet, but unfortunately, it started falling apart after a couple of washes, so i don’t recommend mine!

the star of this look is definitely beth’s navy blue skort. i found one from the girlfriend collective that is almost an exact match! everything i’ve purchased from the brand has soft, activity-friendly fabric, which is amazing for being all water bottles! and, while i assume most of you have a pair of white crew socks, i wanted to include girlfriend’s too, just in case you’re in the market!

finally, this look would be incomplete without a pair of white sneakers and a white headband like above! overall, this look is pretty easy to recreate with simple accessories you may or may not have in your closet and is wearable both on and off the court!

look four

look four is probably the most *beth* look out of the six i’ve chosen. when people think of beth harmon, they envision an outfit like this to go with her. it’s the exact preppy look that she dons in public, probably contributing to her wildfire-fast-spreading notoriety (i mean, besides her obvious talent).

the star of this look is 100% that silky midi skirt. last year taught me my love for a good midi skirt. but, beyond that, the peter pan collar is bringing me back to like 2012. this look is the perfect mix of orphanage beth and bad bitch beth.

look four: redone

okay, i’m really excited about this first item: a detachable (and custom-made) peter pan collar from etsy. the photo is from pinterest, but the shop has a BUNCH of different collars to chose from. i bet you could even send in the beth photo for a commission!

i chose to switch up the colors of this look around the collar, so instead of the black citta bodysuit, i went with the cream. then, i found this silk midi skirt, but a pink one would also be to-die-for, as it would matches the color of the collar like beth did in her outfit. it would just be… perfection.

look five

this look is another casual, at-home look from beth that i just love. after living in boston for two winters, i can appreciate the power of a chunky cowl neck.

this look is bare bones. if you’re new to cold winters (like i was last year), this is the perfect example of a base layer moment. the black leggings could easily be insulated tights and when beth goes outside, layered under a fun pair of pants.

so, i think this is almost an exact dupe for the sweater beth is wearing. the poste turtleneck sweater from reformation is just the quintessential cozy knit sweater. the piece is so versatile, so i wanted to give it a solo highlight.

also, there was no cute way of showing a pair of leggings. you know what they look like, you have a pair. if you were going for a true base layer outfit, i’d recommend uniqlo’s heattech line. they keep me warm in any temperature and let me wear pants that are definitely not in season.

if you were going out of the hotel room, what would you wear with this sweater? if i were beth, i’d don a sturdy pair of jeans or maybe some funky velvet pants.

look six

seriously, are you trying to kill me queen’s gambit stylists? i saved another one of my favorites for last. and, just like the first, i don’t even want to attempt to recreated the beauty of this look.

in the final sequence of the show, beth walks through russia wearing this adorable matching outwear set. obviously, if you did want to recreate this outfit, simply grab a bunch of matching winter items.

this look is so amazing not just because of the monochrome moment, but the details. the buttons on the coat, the edges of the gloves, the matching texture of the beanie and coat. it’s so put-together, but i bet beth didn’t think twice putting it on.

if this post has shown me anything, beth was not only a chess genius, but a fashion one as well. whether she was alone or on a national stage, she was dressed to impress. and, this fashion lover loved the queen’s gambit for it.
